A Dead Design masking set for the glazing of the late Japanese army fighter Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate in 1:48 scale.
The Hayate, literally gale, is often called the best production fighter of the Japanese Army Air Force. It was powered by a strong radial engine, it had a good rate of climb and heavy armament, and in the hands of an experienced pilot it could deal with American opponents of the end of the war. Its reputation was dragged down, however, by falling production quality, trouble with the landing gear and the poor fuel of the last months of the fighting. The Allies listed it under the name Frank.
The cockpit of the Ki-84 sits high and offers a good field of view, so the frames run across markedly curved surfaces. It is on convex glass in particular that tape cut in place does not hold: in a bend it lifts and paint runs under it. A mask that respects the shape of the frame gets around that problem and keeps the same width even where the curvature is greatest.
Washed and dry glazing, the mask seated exactly to the engraved frames, thorough pressure in the curves. Spray in two or three thin coats, because a heavy coat gathers into droplets on a round surface. Once it has set, lift the mask with tweezers and correct any overrun with the tip of a toothpick.
