1:48 Kitchenware

Kitchenware for a diorama in 1:48 scale

The 1:48 scale is the home scale of aircraft models and at the same time a large share of machinery and figures is built in it. The set brings small kitchen furnishing into it, that is utensils and tableware with which an interior, a field rear area or the civilian part of a scene is equipped. On its own it makes no model; it is the last layer of detail, added once the main build stands.

A smaller scale, different rules

In 1:48 the accessories are markedly smaller than in 1:35, and that changes the way of working. Shapes read less easily, so contrast matters more than accurate drawing: a dark shadow in a recess and a light edge on top. On the other hand the worry about fine lettering and surface texture falls away, as they are not visible in this scale anyway. It therefore pays to paint faster and with a greater difference of light and shadow than one would expect.

How to work with the accessories

• Paint the parts while still on a stick or on the fret, as you will not reach them once they are glued on
• Push the contrast higher than in larger scales, otherwise the detail disappears in the whole
• Glue with super glue in a small amount, as any excess drowns a small shape
• Try the arrangement dry first and look at a photograph of the scene on a screen
• Keep the weathering fine, as coarse pigment in 1:48 looks like a deposit

Who the set is for

For builders of dioramas and display scenes in 1:48 scale, whether they are building an airfield rear area, the interior of a building or a civilian view. It suits everywhere a scene is meant to look inhabited and where making such small things by hand would take a disproportionate amount of time.

Paints, glue and a base for the diorama are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
