Masking film for the two-part cockpit canopy of the L-39C Albatros jet trainer, 1:48.
Responsibility details are not available.
The L-39, built at Vodochody, replaced the older Delfin and became the most widespread jet trainer of the Eastern Bloc. The two seats are arranged in tandem with the instructor's rear position raised, power comes from an Ivchenko AI-25TL turbofan engine and the whole concept aimed at easy maintenance on field airfields. The C version served for basic and advanced training and flew in dozens of countries, so it offers modelers an enormous choice of color schemes, from sober grays to eye-catching display finishes.
The Albatros canopy opens sideways in two separate sections with a fixed frame standing between them. The set covers these areas with shaped cut-outs of film that follow the real edges of the glazing. The result is an even frame width along the whole length, which is hard to achieve with a brush.
Polish and degrease the glazing first, then transfer the individual pieces and press their corners down carefully. If you plan an open cockpit, remember to mask the inside of both sections as well and spray them in the interior shade. Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat builds a ridge at the edge of the mask that stays visible once it is lifted.
Home-based machines wore a combination of gray-green tones with a light underside, while training aircraft from other countries reached for bold warning shades on the nose and the wingtips. Whatever you choose, the crisp edge of the glazing is what shows most on a finished model seen close up, so the work with the mask pays off. The plastic model and the paints have to be bought separately.
