Converting the unsuccessful LaGG-3 to the M-82 radial engine is among the best improvisations of the Second World War. The stronger powerplant lifted the performance at medium altitudes and a machine built mostly of wood and plywood became an equal opponent to the German fighters. It was built in enormous batches and on the first examples pilots complained mainly about the heat in the cockpit and the poor view to the rear.
The cockpit of the La-5 has three parts: the framed windscreen, the sliding center hood and the rear glazed part set into the fuselage spine. On early machines the spine fairing was high and the rear windows small, so the framing is wide and the panes of glass are tiny. A mask is rewarding here precisely because the ratio of frame to glass is unfavorable and applying tape by hand swallows more time than the whole rest of the cockpit build.
The rear glazing set into the spine is hard to mask once it is glued in, because its frame is flush with the fuselage skin. Mask it therefore before the fuselage halves are joined, and leave the sliding part until the end. Soviet fighters are also often sprayed with two gray shades over one another, so if the film holds well, both coats pass over it without bleeding. The edge of the frame then stays straight even where the shades meet.
