This full photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard concentrates on the landing flaps of a model of the Italian Macchi MC.200 fighter in 1:48 scale. The plastic flaps are usually molded in one piece with the wing and come out too thick for the scale. The photo-etched parts are the right thickness, with the reinforcing structure drawn in, and they let the flaps be shown lowered, as the machine looked on landing and on the ramp. It is an accessory to a model, not a kit of the aircraft.
The Macchi MC.200 Saetta was an Italian fighter designed by Mario Castoldi and one of the mainstays of the Regia Aeronautica at the beginning of the Second World War. It was powered by a Fiat radial engine, which gave the machine only modest speed but excellent handling: in a turning fight the Saetta was among the most agile aircraft of its day. The armament was a pair of heavy machine guns above the engine. It flew over the Mediterranean, in North Africa and on the Eastern Front, and some machines had an open cockpit, which at the time was a concession Italian pilots liked, however unusual.
Try dry first where the cut will run and only then cut the plastic flaps away; on a thin wing it is easy to go too deep. Bend the photo-etched parts over the edge of a hard ruler in one movement; repeated bending tires the metal and the part cracks. Lowered flaps reveal the inside of the wing, so it pays at least to suggest it. Glue with a vanishing amount of cyanoacrylate glue and fit the parts only after trying the whole wing together.
