Dornier Do 335B-2 Pfeil 1:48 mask set, the EXPERT level (New Ware)

Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks for the model of the Dornier Do 335 Pfeil in the B-2 version, 1:48 scale, in the most comprehensive step of the range. It is not a kit but an accessory that takes the place of cutting masking tape by hand. Compared with the basic level it holds more masks and also covers the areas that are otherwise dealt with by improvising.

When to bring the masks in during the build

A mask set is put to best use when it is reckoned with from the start. The glazing is masked while it is still a loose part, that is before it is glued into the airframe, because only then can the mask be pressed down all the way round and checked against the light. The wheels are masked once the tire has been sprayed, so that the rim is sprayed over a finished base. And the national insignia, if they are sprayed, come at the very end, onto a mature and clear coated surface. Anyone who thinks this sequence through beforehand saves themselves needless re-masking and repairs.

The real subject

The Do 335 Pfeil was a German airplane of the end of the Second World War with an unusual tandem arrangement of the power plant: one engine with a tractor propeller in the nose, the other with a pusher propeller in the tail. A cruciform tail and a nose gear went with it. The B-2 version was intended as the heavy fighter form with strengthened armament. The type never reached wider service.

Procedure

• Mask the glazing as a loose part, not once it has been glued into the fuselage
• Once the mask is laid on, look it over against the light, as a gap at the edge is spotted best that way
• Spray the wheels separately and apply the mask to the rim only onto dry tire paint
• Between the individual coats of color let the paint merely set
• Take the masks off in the reverse order to the one in which you applied them
