A set of self-adhesive masks cut to shape for a model of the Heinkel He 111 H-3 bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not an accessory that changes the shape of the model, but an aid for the painting stage. With this maker's sets the BASIC grade means the smallest coverage offered, that is the basic cover of the areas; wider grades take in further masked places.
The glazed nose of the He 111 is made up of a great many small, irregular panes. Cutting tape by hand for such an assembly can easily take an evening, and a single crooked strip is enough to make the result look untidy. A pre-cut mask covers the glass exactly along the edge of the frame, so the most tedious part of the build becomes a routine of a few minutes and the frames come out the same width along their whole length.
The He 111 was a German twin-engine medium bomber that appeared in the middle of the 1930s and in the Second World War was one of the basic types of the bomber force. The H series was powered by Jumo 211 engines and became the most numerous; the H-3 version of the late 1930s was given heavier defensive armament. Machines of this series were used extensively over Britain in 1940, where their vulnerability to fighters became clear.
With extensive glazing, work in sections and always press the mask down all the way round, so that paint cannot creep under it. It pays to spray a thin coat of the interior color first and then the external camouflage. A final matte coat brings out the edges of the frames. Lift the mask off with tweezers by a corner while the paint is only dry to the touch.
The package contains masking parts only. The model, paints and glue are not included. The masks are shaped for the ICM kit, so please check that they match your own model.
