New Ware Mask Su-33 and J-15 Flying Shark — exhaust nozzles 1:48

A separate mask set aimed at the exhaust nozzles of models of the carrier-based fighters Su-33 and J-15 in 1:48 scale. It is not a replacement for the set for the canopy glazing but a supplement for one particular part of the model. The package contains masks only.

Why the nozzles are worth masking

The rear part of the engine nacelles is one of the most conspicuous places on a model of a modern fighter. The segments of the nozzle do not share a single shade — metal surfaces are commonly sprayed in several metallic shades and the parts under thermal load are set apart with further toning. Running the narrow segments round by hand with a brush looks irregular, whereas through a mask every band can be sprayed cleanly and the transitions come out crisp. With metallic shades that goes doubly — metallic paints are merciless to unevenness and smears.

Tips for painting the nozzles

• Stir metallic paint thoroughly before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom.
• Lay metallic shades on a smooth base, as every groove left by sanding is emphasized in metal.
• Spray metallic paints at the very end, as they are harder to overspray and to mask than ordinary paints.
• Do not apply a mask to fresh metallic paint, as it needs longer to cure than a matte paint.
• Keep the differences in color between the segments subtle, as a strong contrast looks unnatural on a model.
