Markings in 1:48 scale for the QF-4E, that is for the Phantom II in its last service form. The sheet is an accessory for a built model; the airframe, paints and varnish are not in the package. The extent of the markings is given in the enclosed instructions.
QF-4Es came about by converting worn-out F-4E fighter-bombers into remotely controlled aerial targets. The aircraft received a remote control system and could fly without a crew during missile trials and live training; on ferry and display flights, by contrast, they were often flown by a man in the cockpit. For a modeler it is a rewarding theme, because target machines differ from ordinary Phantoms at first glance: they carry conspicuous high-visibility panels meant to make them easy to see when being tracked from the ground. Operation of the target Phantoms ended in the second half of the 2010s, and with that the type closed more than half a century of service.
The bold panels on the wings and the tail are usually a rich orange or red and are applied over a smooth gloss surface, otherwise the texture of the finish shows through. Because these are large continuous pieces of marking, count on a longer time to line them up and on pressing them gently onto the surface.
