About product

1:48 Messerschmitt Me-262B-1a and Avia CS-92 - wheel bays

This photo-etched set from Metallic Details serves to finish off the wheel bays on models of the two-seat versions of the Messerschmitt Me 262 and of their postwar Czechoslovak counterpart, the Avia CS-92, in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory. The basic model is bought separately.

Why the wheel bays

The Me 262 has a nose gear, and the main wheel bays are visible on a model on a stand both from below and from the front. In injection-molded kits these spaces tend to be flat and without structure, or to have only suggested ribbing. The thickness of photo-etched sheet comes close to real skin, so the stiffeners, covers and conduits look like sheet metal parts and the bay gains depth. It is one of those modifications that do not change the silhouette of the model but markedly raise its level at close range.

The real subject

The Me 262 was the first jet fighter to be series produced. The two-seat Me 262B-1a came about as a trainer, and the Me 262B-1a/U1 version then as a night fighter with radar in the nose. After the war several machines were completed in Czechoslovakia from surviving parts, single-seaters under the designation S-92 and two-seaters as the CS-92; they flew with the Czechoslovak Air Force at the end of the 1940s. The set covers all these two-seat variants, because their landing gear structure is practically identical.

Building and painting tips

With photo-etch it is the preparation that decides. Cut the parts off with a scalpel, deburr the remains of the tabs with a file and only then form them. Bending follows the etched grooves, which set the exact angle, and is best done in a bending tool; bent with pliers, thin sheet buckles easily. Meter cyanoacrylate glue in minute drops so that it does not run into the engraving. Before painting, degrease the brass with alcohol and apply primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal and will rub off during assembly.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the two-seat Me 262 in 1:48 scale
  • anyone interested in the postwar Czechoslovak Air Force and Avia machines
  • advanced modelers with experience of bending photo-etch
  • builders who display a model on a stand

The set is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
