About product

The MiG-17PF cockpit in 1:48 scale

The set from Red Fox Studio is a color print of the instrument panel and cockpit details with 3D texture, laid on decal paper. It is not a model of the aircraft and not a resin part to be glued — it is an accessory applied as a decal onto the plastic base from the kit.

What makes the Fresco D cockpit special

The PF version is an interceptor meant for work in poor visibility, and that is exactly what sets it apart inside from the day-fighter MiG-17F. Operating the onboard radar called for its own indication and controls, so there are more elements in front of the pilot than on the day version and the layout of the panel shifts. Otherwise it is a purely analog world of the 1950s: round dials without a single display, toggle switches and narrow side consoles squeezed in by a slender fuselage. The canopy slides to the rear and the windscreen is flat, so the upper part of the panel stays easy to read even once the cockpit is closed — it is worth doing properly.

Decal, photo-etched parts or a brush

A photo-etched panel gives relief, but you have to add the color, the scales and the needles yourself. A decal from the box tends to be a flat print without depth. And hand painting gauges in 1:48 is work under a magnifier that few people can repeat twenty times over with the same result. This print carries both the color and a three-dimensional structure at once, so the instruments look recessed into the panel. The procedure is the usual decal one: cut it out, soak it in warm water, slide it onto a degreased and smoothly painted base, settle it with a decal softener and let it dry out thoroughly.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a legible cockpit without photo-etched parts and without painting scales
  • Builders who leave the canopy open or slid back
  • Those who work with decals routinely and have a decal softener at hand
  • Anyone interested in 1950s jet equipment in 1:48

This is a cockpit accessory, not a kit. The kit, paints, decal softener and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a cockpit accessory — a colored 3D textured print of the instrument panel on decal paper. The kit itself has to be bought separately.

As a decal: cut the part out, soak it in warm water, slide it onto a degreased and smoothly painted base, settle it with a decal softener and let it dry out thoroughly. Neither cyanoacrylate nor solvent cement is used.

On this type, yes. The windscreen is flat and the canopy low, so the upper part of the instrument panel stays visible. If you are closing the cockpit, concentrate mainly on the upper row of instruments.

The print is cut to the shape of a particular instrument panel, so before application compare the shape of the plastic part with your print and trim it to suit if necessary.
