Mikoyan MiG-15bis 1:48 mask set (Eduard)

Precisely shaped self-adhesive masks from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the MiG-15bis fighter in 1:48 scale. The set serves to cover the glazing of the canopy and the windshield while spraying, so that the frames come out sharp and even. This is the standard form, which masks the glazing from the outer face; the version with masks for both faces is a separate item under the TFace designation. The set is not a model of the aircraft or a kit; it is an accessory for painting a finished model.

The real subject

The MiG-15 was a single-seat jet fighter with a swept wing and swept tail surfaces, one of the first mass-produced machines of its generation. The MiG-15bis version was given a more powerful jet engine and a range of detail changes to the airframe and the armament. Characteristic features of the type are the cylindrical fuselage with a nose air intake, the high-set horizontal tail on the fin and a teardrop canopy. The aircraft served in many countries, including license production in Czechoslovakia.

How to use the masks

Clean and degrease the glazing first, and only then stick the mask down and press the edges with a toothpick. Spray the paint in thin layers, otherwise it likes to come away beyond the mask when it is lifted. Take the mask off slowly and at a sharp angle, ideally while the finish is only just touch-dry. The teardrop canopy of the MiG has large clear areas; once the frame masks are on, cover those with ordinary masking tape.
