Eduard 1:48 Mikoyan MiG-21MF surface panels is a photo-etched set of external panels and covers for 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory aimed at the surface of the airframe.

An add-on photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for 1:48 scale. Unlike cockpit sets, this one deals with the surface of the airframe - the external panels, small covers and fittings that on the real machine are made of thin sheet and cannot be molded to scale thickness in a kit. The set is cut for a particular kit, so the shapes and spacings match its surface.
The surface of a combat aircraft is not a smooth shell. It is put together from panels, service hatches and covers that have an edge, an overlap and a gap of their own. Injection-molded plastic manages that only as an engraved line, because the real sheet thickness works out at hundredths of a millimeter in 1:48 scale. A photo-etched panel, by contrast, has a real edge that casts a shadow and in which a wash settles - and that is exactly what creates the impression that the model is put together from sheet rather than cast in one piece. The effect is strongest on the parts where the surface looks straight at the viewer, that is on the spine of the fuselage and on the upper surface of the wing.
It makes sense to fit the panels before the model is filled and sanded, so that the surrounding surface can be leveled afterwards. The spot under the photo-etch has to be flat: sand away any engraved lines that the new panel will cover, otherwise the part will not seat and the gap will give it away. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue in drops applied with a pointed tool, never straight from the bottle. Degrease the sheet with alcohol and use a primer for metal, and only then the color. Panel lines around the new parts are drawn in over a gloss clear coat, otherwise the wash will bleed into the matte surface.
This is an add-on set, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
