Die-cut masks from Dead Design for the landing gear bays of a model of the Nakajima B5N carrier torpedo bomber in 1:48 scale. The set has nothing to do with the glazing or with decals; it covers the open bays in the wing.
A bay is an enclosed space with several walls that cannot be reached comfortably by hand or with a brush. That is exactly why it is painted first and closed off first too. A die-cut mask fits into the outline of the opening and holds the edge where the interior meets the lower surface of the wing; a piece of paper or cotton wool, by contrast, shifts in the depth of the part and the edge gets smeared.
The Kate has a sizable wing with folding tips and the bays in it are fairly large, so overspray flows into them more readily than on a fighter. It pays to press the mask into all the corners with a stick and to look at the part against the light before spraying: where a gap shows through, the paint will get in too. If you build the model with the rear gunner's position or the pilot's station open, mask those separately; this set is intended for the bays.
The B5N was a carrier-borne torpedo and level bomber of the Imperial Japanese Navy with a crew of three and retractable landing gear. The designations B5N1 and B5N2 belong to the two main production versions, which differed in their powerplant.
