1:48 Nakajima E8N1 Type 95 Dave national insignia masks from Dead Design. The insignia is sprayed directly onto the surface, so it does not lift even on the fabric-covered areas of a biplane.

A set of masks from Dead Design for the national insignia of a Nakajima E8N1 floatplane biplane model in 1:48 scale. These are not canopy masks; they serve for spraying the national markings instead of a decal.
On a biplane a considerable part of the insignia lies on areas with simulated fabric covering, that is on a surface that undulates between the ribs and is rarely flat. It is precisely there that a decal fails most often: the carrier film does not adhere across the hollows, after drying it stays stretched and in reflections it shows as a silvery island. Sprayed paint has no film, so it follows the profile of the surface and the fine engraving, and once matted you cannot tell it from the finish around it.
Lay the mask onto a finished, dry and degreased coat. On an undulating surface do not press it with the fingers alone: go over the edge with a blunt tool and let the film settle into every hollow. A light pass of the base shade follows, which seals the edge, and only then the color of the insignia in two or three thin coats. Lift the mask off while the varnish is not yet fully cured.
The E8N1 was a floatplane biplane reconnaissance aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy, launched by catapult from surface ships. Its designation carried the name Type 95 and its Allied code name was Dave.
