A set of masks from Dead Design for the national insignia of a model of the observation aircraft O-1, in Army designation L-19, in 1:48 scale. These are not masks for the cabin - this item deals with the national markings. It is based on the dimensions of the Hasegawa or Model USA kits.
The American national marking is not a single-color area: the star in a rectangular field is made up of a light and a dark part, and possibly of a colored border according to the particular scheme. With sprayed masks the way therefore goes in layers - first the light area, after drying the dark one, and between the steps the masking is changed. The layout of the sheet determines how many steps will be needed, so go through it before the first pass and plan the order.
A decal of the American roundel is fairly large and its carrier film stretches across the whole rectangle. On a flat finish the edge of the film gives itself away by a glossy outline and over riveting it easily lifts. A sprayed insignia lies straight on the surface, follows the engraving and after flattening does not differ from the rest of the model. On top of that it cannot be damaged during handling, as happens to decals on the edges of a wing.
The finish of the airframe has to be dried, smooth and degreased. Press the mask down around the perimeter, seal the edge with a weak pass of the base shade and apply the paint in thin coats. Between the color steps always let it dry thoroughly, otherwise what you have just sprayed will be torn off while the masking is changed.
