About product

Jerrycans, tins and small fittings in 1:48 scale (Hauler)

A set of diorama accessories from the Czech brand Hauler. It is not a kit of a vehicle or an aircraft but loose small objects that are placed around a scene, on the bed of a truck, by a workshop post or on a field airfield.

What it is for

A diorama is usually not short of its main model but of its surroundings. An empty area around a vehicle looks sterile and the viewer has nothing by which to gauge size. Fuel jerrycans, oil tins and other small items solve that problem at once: they give a scene scale, suggest the activity going on there and naturally fill out the composition. They also help to cover less successful transitions between the base and the model.

Tips for placing and painting

First lay the objects out dry and photograph the scene, and only then glue. A photograph reveals an unbalanced composition better than the eye does. Do not set the small items in a row or evenly over the area but in small clusters, the way a person puts them down while working. Paint them separately from the base so that they can be turned round from every side, and use several shades, because a uniform color gives away that they come from one set. Let a thin wash onto the metal and add spots of rust; for labels and lettering a suggested stroke of a brush will do. Finally settle the objects into the base by sinking them in slightly and adding dust pigment at the foot, so that they do not lie on it as though on glass.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas and vignettes in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who are short of small props for a scene
  • those who want to bring the bed of a vehicle or a workshop corner to life
  • beginners at dioramas, because small items are good practice at painting

It is supplied unpainted. The base, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. They are small diorama objects meant to be placed around a scene, not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft.

It is a collection of small accessories; the exact number of pieces is specified on the packaging and in the manufacturer's instructions.

Small containers of this kind were used for many decades, so they will serve in most scenes with ground vehicles and in a civilian setting too.

Sink them slightly into the base and add dust pigment or a little soil at the foot. A sharp line between an object and the base is the most common mistake.
