A bundled package from the Big Ed range by the Czech maker Eduard, intended for a model of the Lockheed P-38J Lightning in 1:48 scale. Big Ed brings together several separately sold accessory sets for one particular model and offers them in a single box. It is not an airplane kit: the base model has to be obtained separately. On the twin-boom Lightning the accessories pay off especially well: the aircraft has a broad glazed canopy, two engine booms and richly detailed landing gear, so there are many places where fine metal detail tells.
The P-38 Lightning is an American twin-engined fighter with a characteristic twin-boom layout and a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament. The J version brought reworked cooling: the oil coolers moved into new intakes under the engines, which changed the shape of the nacelles compared with the earlier batches. It was from this version on that the Lightning became a fully capable long-range escort fighter. The machine served in Europe and in the Pacific and was also used for reconnaissance.
Cut the photo-etched parts from the fret with a sharp knife against a hard surface and deburr every cut with a fine stone. Make the bends over a metal edge or in a bending tool, not with your fingers: thin sheet otherwise buckles and a straight bend can no longer be made. Do not sand the color-printed parts and do not expose them to aggressive thinner. Bond with super glue in a very small drop applied with the tip of a wire; any excess dries into a white bloom that is hard to remove deep in an interior. Undercoat metal parts that are to be painted with a primer for metal.
The bundle is an accessory, not an airplane kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
