Early P-40s with the short nose and six machine guns were among the few things the Americans had left serviceable on Hawaii in December 1941. Two pilots took off from an auxiliary strip away from the main base and in the following hours scored the first victories over the Pacific. The aircraft was no match for the Japanese fighters in combat at altitude, but it had a solid structure, a good dive and it took a hit after which a lighter opponent would have burned.
At the same time the version exported to China carried a marking that became an icon of the whole war: the white-edged mouth on the radiator under the nose. The volunteer group borrowed it from a photograph of British machines from North Africa and used the tactic of attacking from above and leaving at once, because a turning fight against the Japanese types was lost in advance. In the frontline fighter role, though, the P-40B finished its service early and in 1942 stronger versions replaced it.
Besides the usual masking of the cockpit from both sides, the set contains two whole sets of national insignia masks. That comes in useful, because the American markings of the period went through several changes of shape and color in a short time and the modeler can therefore choose.
