Masking parts for the cockpit and the national insignia of the Curtiss P-40M fighter in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The P-40 line changed in small steps during the war, and the letter M belongs to one of the late branches with a lengthened fuselage. It received an Allison engine with a modified supercharger, meant to give back part of the power lost at greater altitudes, and its recognition feature became the small grilles on the sides of the nose ahead of the exhausts. Most of the machines built did not stay at home, though. They went out under Allied aid to the Commonwealth, where they carried the name Kittyhawk, and to units on the Eastern Front.
New Zealand squadrons flew them in the South Pacific, where a strong airframe and decent speed near the ground meant more than high-altitude qualities. Fighting took place low down, often over jungle and sea, and the machine took hits that would have brought a lighter structure down. By the end of the war the type no longer figured in the front rank; it moved to training and to patrols over less exposed sectors. Its significance lies in having been available at a time when there was nothing better.
Two masks cover the glazing and one is for the insignia. On this type the frame of the sliding part of the canopy and of the fixed windscreen has fairly wide strips, so the result shows a great deal when seen from the side.
It is best to stick the film on only after the clear part has been polished. Polishing paste applied later would be drawn under the edge of the mask and would stay there for good. When lifting the film off, do not pull it straight up but smoothly to the side across the surface of the glass, so the frame is not loaded.
