The Thunderbolt was among the largest and heaviest single-engine fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp eighteen-cylinder radial with a turbocharger housed in the rear fuselage, and its armament was eight 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing. The D-25 production block brought a teardrop canopy with a cut-down fuselage spine, which markedly improved the view to the rear. The aircraft proved itself as an escort fighter and as a tough attack machine against ground targets over Europe.
