A set of die-cut masks in 1:48 for the late Thunderbolt with the sliding cockpit. It masks the outer glazing and adds two masks for the insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
An empty Thunderbolt weighed roughly as much as two Spitfires and its eighteen-cylinder Pratt & Whitney radial with a turbocharger at the rear of the fuselage took up half the internal space. It was precisely the turbocharger that made the aircraft fast at high altitude and at the same time gave it the reputation of an armored vehicle that could take a hit after which another fighter would have fallen. The air-cooled engine up front worked as armor.
As soon as Mustangs took over the escort duties, the groups with late Thunderbolts shifted to attacks on ground targets. In the summer of 1944 they operated from temporary field strips in Normandy and went after columns, locomotives and bridges. The losses were felt, because low flying exposes the coolant and oil lines to fire at close range, but the toughness of the airframe brought aircraft home with shot-through skin and even with pieces of the tailplane torn away.
A rounded canopy with no frame structure is hard to outline with a brush or with tape; pre-cut film seats precisely into the transition between glass and metal and saves long trimming. The insignia are then sprayed through separate stencils, so the layer of finish stays equally thick across the whole surface.
Lift the film with flat-jawed tweezers so as not to scratch the transparent area. Neither a kit nor paints belong to the set. Before you start spraying, try laying the largest piece on dry; that confirms that the cut matches the glazing you have on the bench and avoids a surprise under the paint.
