The P-51D Mustang is an American single-seat fighter of the Second World War and the most widely built version of the whole type. You recognize it by the frameless teardrop canopy and the cut-down rear fuselage, which together gave the pilot a view in every direction. That is exactly what matters for a model: the cockpit is visible from above and from the sides, and the seat with its belts stays in view even once the build is finished.
Seat belts in a kit are usually only suggested by engraving on the cushion, because injection-molded plastic cannot manage a thin strap with buckles. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, is as thin as a real strap and can be bent so that the belt drapes freely over the edge of the seat and the buckles point where they belong on the real aircraft. The set is in the STEEL version, that is in steel, which holds its shape after bending more reliably than softer metals.
The parts are held in the fret by thin tabs. Separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not by twisting, and sand the remains of the tab down. Make the bends over a straight edge or shape them with flat tweezers; steel takes repeated adjustment of the shape. Degrease the parts before gluing and glue them with super glue, because polystyrene cement does not hold on metal. Fit the belts to the seat before you close the fuselage up, as it will be out of reach afterwards.
The set is for modelers bothered by a flat, beltless seat in a finished cockpit, and for those who do not want to make the straps from paper or foil. The kit, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
