This figure from the aviation range of the Czech manufacturer Plus Model presents an American pilot of the Republic F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber in 1:48 scale. The resin casting is intended as an accessory to a model of the aircraft; the figure of a pilot gives a machine in a display case scale, a story and a human dimension.
The F-105 Thunderchief, nicknamed Thud among its crews, was a massive supersonic fighter-bomber that bore the main weight of the American strikes over North Vietnam in the 1960s. The pilots of these machines flew in flight suits with G-suit trousers, a helmet and an oxygen mask, completed by a life vest with equipment for the event of ejection over enemy territory. A figure in this typical kit suits other American types of the same era as well.
Wash the resin casting in soapy water, remove the casting blocks and join any parts with cyanoacrylate glue. After a base coat of primer, paint according to period photographs; the olive and sage tones of the flight suit and the kit are nicely brought to life by a fine oil wash and drybrushing on the folds. A helmet treated in detail tends to be the effective finishing touch.
