The Polikarpov I-153 Chaika, meaning seagull, was a Soviet fighter biplane of the 1930s. You will recognize it by the cranked upper wing, to which it owes its name, and by its retractable landing gear, which was an unusual feature on a biplane. Some of these machines fell into Finnish hands and Finland operated them during the war, so on them you will find quite different markings and shades from those on the Soviet machines.

Markings change the character of this machine a great deal: the same biplane looks different with Finnish markings from the way it does in its original form, and that is usually the reason a modeler buys the sheet. The numbering with the designation of a first volume suggests that this is the first part of a wider treatment of the subject.
Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether it is not a self-adhesive version; self-adhesive film that has been soaked is ruined for good, whereas a wet decal can be soaked at any time later. With the usual wet version, proceed as follows: cut the decal out with a margin, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it stand until it begins to slide on the paper. Apply it to a smooth gloss surface, because on a matte one air will stay under the film and the edge will go white. Press the water out from under the decal with a soft cloth, overcoat it with gloss varnish once dry, add the shades and finally even the surface out with matte varnish.
The sheet will be appreciated by modelers who build prewar and wartime biplanes and are interested in the Finnish Air Force.
