This set from Brengun reproduces pierced steel planking, known by the abbreviation PSP and also called Marston Mat. It is a diorama accessory for models in 1:48 scale, not an airplane model or a kit. You will use it as the surface of a base on which a finished model will stand.
Pierced steel plates were used during the Second World War and in postwar conflicts to harden field airfields. The individual panels interlocked with side latches and within a few days a load-bearing runway and hardstands could be laid from them on muddy or sandy ground. The holes served to save weight and to drain water. For a modeler it is one of the most rewarding surfaces: the regular pattern of holes gives a scene scale, it catches the eye in its own right, and a finished model on it immediately looks set in a setting rather than standing on a table.
Prepare the base first so that it is flat and stable, because unevenness will show through a thin surface. Lay the set out dry and think through where the joints between the panels will be, so that the pattern lines up. Cutting always has to follow the grid, not at random across the holes. Glue it to the base over its whole area so that the surface does not bulge anywhere. Paint in several steps: a base in a steel shade or dark gray, then thin washes into the recesses and rusty tones at the edges. In the field, soil and grass were pressed into the holes, so once it is dry, work in pigments and a dry brush: an evenly clean surface looks improbable. Cover the edges of the strip with soil or grass scatter so that the transition to the base is not abrupt.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. A base, glue, paints and a model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
