Pre-cut stencils for spraying the British Type A1 national insignia in 1:48 scale, that is the roundel supplemented with a narrow yellow outer border. In the package there are two insignia masks and nothing else; the glazing of the model is masked separately. The film holds the shape of the individual rings, so the colors are applied in layers and the resulting insignia is part of the sprayed finish, not a stuck-on film.
Responsibility details are not available.
The yellow outer ring was added to the British roundel in 1940. The reason was practical: observers and their own antiaircraft defense had trouble making out the mark on a darkly camouflaged fuselage, and so the insignia was given a border in the color that stands out most against camouflage tones. The Type A1 that came about in this way appeared on the sides of the fuselage and became the typical mark of machines from the summer and autumn of 1940, from Hurricanes and Spitfires to twin-engine bomber aircraft. The width of the border and the overall diameter changed several times during the war, so it is precisely by them that the period a particular aircraft in a photograph comes from can be dated fairly accurately.
A layered insignia has one specific trap. Every color is sprayed through a different stencil and a slight rotation or a shift of a tenth of a millimeter is enough for the resulting ring to be twice as thick on one side as on the other. The surest defense is not to lift the whole insignia at once: leave the outer ring in place as a guide and lay the smaller discs into it, or draw a cross of axes on the surface in advance with a thin pencil and aim by it. Working from the lightest shade to the darkest helps too, because any overrun is then less visible.
