This injection-molded plastic kit captures the Soviet BZ-38 airfield tanker truck, which refueled aircraft during the Second World War. The 1:48 scale matches the most widespread range of combat aircraft models, so the truck suits an airfield diorama naturally — next to a fighter or a ground-attack aircraft it creates a scene with the ground crew and the support facilities. The maker is the Ukrainian brand UM, which concentrates on Soviet equipment and less common support vehicles.
The BZ-38 was the basic refueling vehicle of Soviet Air Force airfields. It was built on the widened three-axle GAZ-AAA truck chassis, carried a tank with a capacity of 1350 liters and had space at the rear for stowing the refueling hoses. It was driven by a four-cylinder engine of fifty horsepower. Series production started in 1938; from 1942 the simplified wartime BZ-38U variant was built, in which a number of body features were pared down to save material and time. Vehicles of this type accompanied Soviet air units throughout the war and they are an indispensable element of any faithful airfield scene.
Assemble and paint the chassis, the axles and the engine section before you seat the tank and the body on the frame — once it is closed you cannot reach them any more. Dry-fit the parts and clean up the mating surfaces, as this is a short-run model. Fit the cab glazing last and mask the window frames. Painting: a uniform Soviet dark green shade, highlighted upper surfaces, a dark wash into the pressings of the body and the steps. On the fenders, under the tank and on the tires it pays to work with pigments — the truck ran on field airfields and a layer of mud belongs to it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
