About product

P-47D Thunderbolt 1:48 - Metal Machine Gun Blast Tubes, Gunsight and Pitot Tube

A set of turned metal parts from Master. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory for a P-47D kit in 1:48 scale that is already built or under construction. According to the name it replaces the blast tubes of the 12.7 mm Browning machine guns in the leading edge of the wing, the gunsight and the Pitot tube.

What the Metal Parts Solve

The plastic muzzles are blind in this scale and have to be drilled out by hand. With a row of barrels side by side the spacing and the angle easily go astray, and one misplaced muzzle shows on a finished wing at first glance. The turned parts come with the bore already there, are straight and concentric, and once fitted they form a regular line. A metal Pitot tube will also take normal handling of a finished model, whereas the thin plastic part often snaps off while being removed from the sprue.

The real subject

The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was an American single-engine fighter of the Second World War with a radial engine and a turbocharger housed in the rear fuselage. Its armament consisted of 12.7 mm Browning machine guns housed in the wings, whose muzzles passed through the leading edge in a staggered arrangement. The aircraft was used for fighter duties and for attacks on ground targets.

Fitting and Painting

The plastic parts are cut off and the holes in the wing are enlarged with a micro drill to the diameter of the shank. The parts are first inserted dry and only after the spacing is checked are they fixed with a drop of super glue or slow-setting epoxy. Before painting, the metal has to be degreased with alcohol and a primer intended for metal surfaces applied, otherwise paint holds badly on the smooth surface. The muzzles look more faithful if they are simply polished and chemically blackened instead of painted. It is a good idea to mask the gunsight before spraying.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers building a P-47D in 1:48 scale who want faithful machine gun muzzles
  • For those who do not fancy drilling eight holes in the leading edge
  • For builders of models meant to be carried and displayed often
  • To complete a build with photo-etched and metal detail

This is an accessory for building a model, not a kit on its own. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a set of turned metal parts that replace the plastic parts of the armament and the sensors on a P-47D model in 1:48 scale. You have to have the aircraft kit itself.

No. The turned parts come with the bore already there. The only drilling is to enlarge the holes in the plastic wing so that the shank of the part fits into them.

Degrease the surface with alcohol and use a primer intended for metal. The muzzles themselves are often better left unpainted and simply polished and chemically blackened.

The name does not state a particular kit. The parts are glued into drilled holes, so it is a good idea to compare the diameters dry before fitting.
