A plastic kit of the Soviet T-34-85 medium tank in 1:48. The manufacturer is the Japanese company Tamiya, which runs a separate line of military vehicles in this scale; the models are smaller than the usual 1:35 but keep the same standard of fit and surface finish the brand is known for. The smaller scale is practical where there is no room in a display case, and it also suits dioramas with several vehicles.
The T-34-85 was the final development stage of the Soviet T-34 medium tank. Compared with the earlier versions it received a new, roomier turret for a crew of three and a more powerful 85 mm gun, which improved both its performance against armored targets and the organization of work inside the vehicle: the commander no longer had to serve the gun as well. The characteristic sloped glacis plate, wide tracks and diesel engine were retained. The type was built in large numbers and after the Second World War it served in a number of armies for decades more.
Finish the running gear before you close the hull up; on the T-34 the wheels and tracks are very visible and hard to reach afterwards. Spray the base coat with an airbrush, then let a dark wash run into the welds and rivets once it has dried, and bring out the edges with a dry brush. Dust and mud pigments belong on the running gear and the lower hull, while the upper surfaces call for a subtle fading instead. Let the tracks settle into a slight sag before the glue hardens. Apply the decals onto a glossy surface and even the finish out with a matte varnish at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
