About product

Sopwith F.1 Camel (Clerget) 1:48, an Eduard photo-etched set of the Zoom range

A 1:48 photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, intended to improve a plastic kit of the British Sopwith F.1 Camel fighter biplane in the version with the Clerget rotary engine. The set belongs to the Zoom range, which is a smaller, color pre-painted subset of the full photo-etched set: it concentrates on what is most visible once the model is finished, above all on the cockpit. The word Weekend in the name refers to the kit edition the set is cut for, because Weekend editions are supplied without photo-etched parts in the box, which makes this set their logical companion.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was a British single-seat fighter biplane of the First World War. The characteristic hump of the cowling over the pair of synchronized machine guns gave the airplane the nickname under which it entered history. It was powered by a rotary engine, and alongside other types the Clerget was used on a number of production batches. The torque of the rotary engine gave the airplane a very quick turn to one side and sluggish behavior to the other; a pilot who got used to it gained an advantage in a dogfight, while a less experienced one struggled with the machine.

Building and painting tips

Separate the photo-etched parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface rather than with nippers, because the fret bends otherwise. Degrease the faces with alcohol before gluing and make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades, so that the edges come out sharp. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or thin epoxy; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. The color-printed parts no longer need to be sprayed; it is enough to pick them out gently with a dark wash once they are fitted, and where appropriate to let the metallic sheen show through on surfaces that are meant to look worn.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who are building the Camel in 1:48 scale and want sharper cockpit detail
  • Builders of editions that have no photo-etched parts in the box
  • Those who want a clear step up in detail without working through a whole large photo-etched set
  • Beginners in working with photo-etched parts, because pre-painted parts are more forgiving than bare metal

This is an add-on set, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is an add-on photo-etched set that you fit into a 1:48 Sopwith Camel plastic kit. The model itself has to be obtained separately.

Zoom is a smaller, color pre-painted subset of the full set. It concentrates mainly on the cockpit, which is the best visible area once the model is finished. The full photo-etched set additionally contains parts for the exterior and other areas and is considerably more extensive.

You do not have to paint the color-printed parts. We recommend only picking them out gently with a dark wash after fitting. Unprinted faces are painted after degreasing and after a primer has been applied.

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or thin epoxy. Ordinary cement for plastic will not join metal.
