The Mark II is the Spitfire that stopped being handwork. It was built in a large factory near Birmingham put up expressly for series output and received the Merlin XII engine with a water-glycol coolant mixture and a cartridge starter, so it was turned over by a short explosion instead of an electric starter. The letter in the designation says what was in the wing: the version with a small a carried eight .303 machine guns, while the sister version had two cannons. Squadrons with the Mark II took part in the closing phase of the Battle of Britain and then served for years with training units.
This item counts on a single cut, that is on the outer side of the canopy. Inside the glass stays clean and the modeler makes do with one application. Anyone who wants the frames indicated on the inner side as well will reach for the numbers of the same series that offer a double set.
The Mark IIs usually carried a brown and green pattern on the upper surfaces and a light underside, with the boundary between the shades sprayed softly by hand. The only things that stayed sharp were the cockpit frame and the outline of the insignia, which is exactly what this set covers. Anyone who does not dare attempt a soft transition can use string or rolled modeling putty as a raised edge.
