A set of masks for the cockpit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vb in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut for the outer side of the glazing and are complemented by two whole sets of national insignia masks and a decal sheet. Tamiya plastic.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mark V became the most numerous version of the Spitfire of all. The Merlin 45 engine and the B-type wing with two Hispano cannons and four machine guns made it the machine that in 1941 bore the weight of the offensive sweeps over occupied France. When the Fw 190A appeared, it turned out that the Mark V was not a match for it, and yet it was flown from Malta to North Africa for a long time afterwards.
The interesting part of the shape is here on the left side: the Spitfire has a hinged door with a small window through which the pilot climbed in, and that window is a separate transparent surface outside the canopy proper. Above it a blown hood runs back, on the Mark V often in the version with an enlarged bubble for a better view. The masks in this set are worked out for the outer surfaces, so the frames get the color of the upper surfaces of the airframe and the inside is touched up by hand.
A double supply of insignia masks makes practical sense on a British aircraft: a roundel has three concentric circles and the stripes on the rudder further colors, so it is masked in several stages. Before you start, think the order of the shades through; a blue circle once sprayed will not be covered by a light color. On the small area of 1:48 scale every inaccuracy in the concentricity of the circles shows up immediately.
