A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:48 scale for a kit of the British fighter aircraft Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX. These are not national insignia or the personal markings of particular machines but technical stencils: the service captions that on the real aircraft were printed directly onto the skin. It is an accessory for a kit, not a model.
On the real aircraft these are the small instructions for the ground crew: the marks of the filler necks, the warnings by the gun bays, the captions of the access covers and the bounding of the places where it is allowed to step. They give a model its sense of scale and its credibility. Most kits do contain some technical stencils, but they tend to come only in a basic extent, and after a few builds of the type there are few of them left in stock. A separate sheet solves this problem and at the same time offers uniform lettering for a whole collection.
The base must be glossy and smooth, otherwise the small lettering will be surrounded by a silvered rim. Cut the stencils out individually and as closely to the lettering as possible. Dip them briefly, transfer them with a moistened brush or tweezers with soft jaws and adjust the position while the film is wet. Into the engraved lines and onto curved surfaces a decal softener helps. Finally unify the surface with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat. In 1:48 scale the work with the stencils is fine, but the result is easy to see on the model.
