Photo-etched landing flaps for a model of the Spitfire Mk.V in 1:48 scale. They make it possible to show the flaps in the lowered position with a thickness a plastic part cannot have.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk.V is among the most numerous versions of this British fighter and was powered by a V12 Merlin engine. Its landing flaps were pneumatically operated and had only two positions: retracted and fully lowered, with no intermediate setting possible. Lowered flaps therefore look very striking on a model and suit a landing scene or an aircraft being prepared on the ground.
A flap is in reality thin sheet metal, and a kit as a rule offers it only as a suggested surface in the wing, or as a plastic part that is many times thicker in scale than it should be. The photo-etched form gives the flap the correct thin edge and makes it possible to show the inside of the space revealed once it is lowered. The set is prepared for 1:48 scale and complements a kit; it does not replace one.
The plastic flaps from the kit usually have to be cut out and the surface sanded down; the exact procedure is given in the instructions to the set. Separate the parts by cutting through the tabs with a sharp blade on a hard surface and make the bends along the scored lines. They are glued with a minute amount of cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting, wash the metal, degrease it and spray it with a base color made for metal. Paint the inner surfaces before you seat the flap in the wing; once it is glued you will no longer reach into the space with a brush.
The model, paints, glue and tools are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
