About product

Masking templates for the Spitfire Mk.XII in 1:48 scale

This is not a kit or a photo-etched set but a set of masks. The self-adhesive film is cut in advance to the shape of the cockpit frames and of the other areas that need covering while spraying. The procedure is simple: peel the template off, stick it onto the clear part, spray the framing along with the rest of the airframe and lift the mask off once the paint has dried. Hand trimming of tape directly on the glazing is entirely done away with. The masks are cut for the Airfix kit.

The single-sided version. The name describes the set as single-sided, that is, intended for masking the outer side of the glazing. In that case the inner side is dealt with differently, usually by filling the cockpit with modeling putty or a piece of foam so that paint mist does not get inside. Anyone who wants the frames painted from inside as well should look for the double-sided version, which the manufacturer lists separately.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.XII was the first production version of the Spitfire with a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. It was tuned for combat at low altitude, where it had markedly better performance than the earlier versions, and some of the machines flew with clipped wingtips. The engine also changed the shape of the nose, which was given the characteristic bulges over the cylinder banks, so the Mk.XII differs at first glance from the older Merlin Spitfires.

Usage tips

Wash the clear part before masking and let it dry; grease from your fingers is what the film holds on worst of all. Carry the templates with tweezers and press the edges down with a toothpick so that paint does not run under the edge. Spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried and with a pull along the surface, not straight up, otherwise you may tear the fresh paint off the frame as well.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Spitfire Mk.XII model in 1:48 scale
  • For modelers who want sharp and straight cockpit frame edges
  • For those who do not want to risk knife scratches on a clear part
  • Suitable for less experienced builders as well

The set contains masking templates only, not the aircraft model, paints or glue, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a set of masking templates; you need your own Spitfire Mk.XII kit in 1:48 scale.

No, the name lists it as single-sided. The inner side has to be covered differently, for example with modeling putty.

Masks are lifted off after spraying and do not stay on the model, whereas a photo-etched set adds permanent metal parts to it.

Press the edges of the mask down with a toothpick and spray thin coats so that the paint does not run under the film.
