A scenic accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale. The name is in the plural, so this is a set of several stringed musical instruments. An object like this changes the character of a scene with a single piece: a technical display turns into a moment of life as soon as something that has nothing to do with the machinery gets into it. The accessory is not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle — these are stand-alone objects of a scene, set into a finished diorama.
In a barrack room, in the parlor of a country house, in the corner of a hangar with a crew waiting, on the bed of a vehicle during a move, or in an inn turned into a headquarters. They work best when they are plainly in use rather than on display: propped against a wall, laid across a bunk, set down beside a seated figure. If you prop an instrument against something, make sure it really touches both points of support — a part hanging in the air shows immediately in a photograph of a diorama.
Cut the parts off the casting block with a fine-toothed saw, sand the cuts back and wash them in lukewarm soapy water before painting. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on resin parts — use cyanoacrylate glue, that is super glue. Lay down a thin primer, paint the body in a warm brown tone and go over it with a thin gloss varnish that imitates varnished wood. Darken the neck and the fretboard and suggest the bridge and the tailpiece with a dark line and a fine brush. The strings are not modeled in this scale, but even a fine light line drawn along the neck makes a big difference. Avoid overdone weathering: even in a rough setting a musical instrument tends to be the best cared-for object in the room.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
