A masking set for the cockpit glazing of the Soviet Su-15 interceptor in 1:48 scale. The parts are prepared for the molding by Trumpeter and cover both sides of the canopy.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-15 came about at the beginning of the 1960s as a specialized interceptor of the air defense forces. Two engines in the rear part of the fuselage, a cranked delta wing with its characteristic break in the leading edge and a massive radar in the nose made it a fast but short-ranged machine whose task was to climb, be guided by commands from the ground and launch guided missiles. It stayed in service from the middle of the 1960s until the break-up of the Soviet Union and in Western reports it appeared under the code name Flagon. The individual production forms differed in the shape of the wing leading edge and in the length of the nose, so they are not interchangeable in shape.
The cockpit of the single-seat version is fairly small and the canopy frames meet at acute angles. It is precisely in the corners that most mistakes arise when masking by hand: the tape lifts, paint bleeds and the frame gets an irregular edge. The shaped parts from this set follow the framing exactly as it is molded on the clear part, so after spraying a sharp transition is left with no tidying up afterwards.
The best results come when the glazing is washed in lukewarm water with dish soap before applying and left to dry thoroughly. Remaining grease from the fingers tends to be the most common reason a mask lifts in a corner before the airbrush is even reached for.
