Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. These are not a kit or spare parts but an aid for painting. You stick the masks onto the clear parts, they cover the transparent areas and leave only the frames of the canopy and the windscreen exposed. The double-sided version allows for masking the glazing from the outside and from the inside, so you paint the framing from inside as well. That is especially useful on a model built with the canopy open, where the inner side of the frame is clearly visible. The set is cut to the shape of the parts of a particular kit in this scale, so with another kit check the fit dry.
The Su-27K, later designated Su-33, is the single-seat carrier version of the heavy fighter of the Su-27 family. For operation from the deck of an aircraft carrier it was given canard foreplanes, folding wing and stabilizer panels, strengthened landing gear with a twin nose wheel, an arrestor hook and a retractable probe for in-flight refueling. The airframe kept the characteristic continuous line of the fuselage and wing, a pair of engines in separate nacelles and two vertical tail surfaces. The cockpit is covered by a large hinged canopy with fairly thin frames.
Wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Pop the masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel and carry them with tweezers. Stick the inner masks on before you fix the canopy to the fuselage. Press each mask from the center toward the edges and smooth the edge down with a toothpick so that no paint runs under it. On the long curved canopy the outline sometimes has to be trimmed with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray thin coats at right angles to the surface, first the interior, then the primer and the covering shades. Lift the mask as soon as the paint has flashed off, pulling it back at an angle over itself.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
