Pre-cut New Ware kabuki masks for the model of the two-seat Su-30SM combat aircraft in 1:48 scale, supplied in the top standard of the range. It is not a kit and not parts of a model — the package holds self-adhesive masks only, which replace cutting tape by hand and measuring the glazing frames. Kabuki tape is thin, paper-based and pliable, so it adapts to the rounded surfaces of the canopy, holds on an edge and leaves no adhesive behind. The EXPERT designation means the widest extent of covered areas within the maker's three-step range (BASIC, ADVANCED, EXPERT); the exact list of parts is given in the instructions in the package. The masks are cut to the specific shape of the parts and match one particular tooling of the model.
The Su-30SM is a two-seat multirole combat aircraft derived from the Su-27 design family. Characteristic of it are the tandem cockpit for two crew, the canards at the wing roots and the pair of engines with thrust vectoring. The long canopy glazing, divided into several parts and carrying prominent frames, is among the most laborious parts of the build on models of this type — and that is exactly where a wider masking set pays off most.
Wash the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap before you start and let it dry, because grease from fingers will lift the masks reliably. Seat the masks dry with tweezers and press the edges down with a blunt tool so that paint cannot creep under them. Spray several light coats; one heavy coat leaves a step at the edge of the mask that shows once it is removed. Interior shade first, then the primer and the top camouflage last. With larger sets it pays to work through the instructions group by group and not to take all the masks off at once — leave the parts that get sprayed later covered.
