The TBM-3 Avenger was a carrier-based torpedo bomber of the US Navy in the Second World War. It is a sturdy single-engine high-wing machine with a piston radial engine, a crew of three, a dorsal gun turret and a roomy bomb bay in the fuselage that could take a torpedo. The wings folded back alongside the fuselage for stowage below the carrier deck. The designation TBM was carried by machines built under license at General Motors, while aircraft from Grumman's own production flew as the TBF. The version numbered 3 was among the most numerous and served until the end of the war.
This is a set of photo-etched parts from thin metal sheet that replace or supplement the details of a kit in 1:48 scale. Photo-etch can capture a thickness that a plastic part in a small scale cannot hold, so it suits grilles, belts, fittings and other fine structure. The range of parts and where they go on the model are described in the instructions supplied with the set.
Cut the parts off the carrier sheet with a sharp blade on a hard surface; never snap them out, because they will bend. Make the bends along the marked groove in a bending tool or between two blades, pressing in short movements along the whole length. Wash and degrease the metal before painting and go over it with a primer, because paint does not hold on a bare smooth surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a tiny quantity on the tip of a toothpick. Work over a surface with a raised edge; a small part will ping away and you will never find it again.
A photo-etched set is supplied. The kit of the aircraft, the paints and the glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
