Great Wall Hobby 1:48 TianGong-1 is a plastic kit of the Chinese orbital laboratory module. An unusual space subject outside the usual range of aircraft and military equipment.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese TianGong-1 orbital laboratory module in 1:48 scale from the brand Great Wall Hobby. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the package holds plastic sprues, decals and instructions. This is a decidedly collector's subject: space hardware appears in plastic modeling only exceptionally, and the Chinese program has very few models made of it.
TianGong-1 was the first Chinese orbital module, launched in 2011 as a test platform for rendezvous and docking technology in orbit. Several Shenzhou spacecraft docked with it in turn, including crewed missions that spent several days in the module. It was a fairly small object compared with the large stations, yet it fulfilled its role as a forerunner of the future Chinese orbital station. Operation of the module ended in 2016 and two years later the module was destroyed on reentry into the atmosphere.
Compared with aircraft the build is simpler in its complexity but harder in its surface. The key is a good base — space hardware has many smooth areas and glossy films where every irregularity shows. Golden and silver areas can be done with metallic paints or with a glossy film; stir metallic paint thoroughly and apply it only over a smooth base. Solar panels look their best in a dark blue gloss finish with a fine grid. It pays to prepare a stand or a base, as the model has no way of standing without one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
