A masking set for the Hawker Typhoon Mk IB with the bubble canopy in 1:48 scale. Two films for the glazing, the outer and the inner side, plus a mask for one national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Typhoon came about as the successor to the Hurricane and in the role of interceptor it disappointed. It made its name one level lower, just above the ground: a Napier Sabre engine of over two thousand horsepower, four twenty millimeter cannon and eight unguided rockets under the wing made it the most feared destroyer of ground targets on the western front. The late series exchanged the framed cover with car doors for a molded bubble, which at last opened up the pilot's view to the rear. It was precisely in this form that the machines broke up German columns in Normandy in the summer of 1944. The recognition feature of that season was the broad black and white stripes around the fuselage and wings, which were meant to tell antiaircraft crews at first glance who was flying above them.
Inside there are two films for the canopy, one for the view from outside and one for the inner side of the frames, and with them the outline of one national insignia. The cut matches the parts of the kit from the Hasegawa company, so there is nothing to try out or trim.
A mask is only as accurate as the surface under it is smooth. A matte finish has a broken, microscopically intricate surface and the adhesive on it will not bed down over the whole area; a network of channels stays between the fibers through which thinner gets under the edge. On a gloss layer there is no such space. Spray the frames over with clear gloss varnish, therefore, before you lay the film on, and let it cure thoroughly. You then knock the gloss back only right at the end with a matte veil over the whole fuselage at once.
