An umbrella is one of the few accessories that settles the weather at first glance. As soon as it appears in a view, the viewer reads a darker ground, puddles and shiny surfaces as rain by himself, even though it is only gloss varnish and a darker shade of soil. It suits urban and village scenes, a railway station, civilian figures waiting by a road and dioramas where a contrast is to arise between equipment and everyday life. An open umbrella moreover helps the composition: it is a large, clearly legible area by which the viewer's gaze can be led to the main motif of the scene.
The cover of an umbrella is to represent thin fabric, so avoid a coarse spray from close up. A thin coat from a greater distance or careful application with a brush is better. Black looks credible, but the scene will benefit if one of the pair is given a more striking shade and carries the gaze at once. Go over the metal parts, that is, the ribs and the stick, with dark steel and polish them lightly. If the scene is to look genuinely rainy, add gloss varnish only in places, because gloss over the whole area looks like plastic. Bring the lower edge of the cover out with a thin dark line, so that the stretched fabric does not merge optically with the background. Glue it to the ground with super glue and work dust and soil in around the place of the joint, so that the accessory does not float on the scene.
