A set of decals in 1:48 scale for models of the fighter and attack aircraft McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in US Navy markings of the Vietnam War period. The term wet decals means classic sheets from which the decal releases once soaked in water — unlike dry transfers, which are rubbed onto the model with pressure. In the package you will find the sheet and instructions for the schemes; a plastic model and paints are not part of it.
The F-4 Phantom II was a two-seat twin-engine aircraft with long range, a powerful radar and guided weapons, originally developed for carrier service and later adopted by other branches as well. Typical of it are the dihedral outer wing panels and the anhedral tailplane. Navy machines differ from the land-based versions in a number of details, for instance in the equipment for a catapult launch and in the arrestor hook. The color schemes of this period tend to be striking: a light lower surface, a gray upper surface and conspicuous unit markings on the vertical tail, which is the main reason a modeler reaches for a separate sheet.
The Phantom has a heavily broken surface, so the decals run across panel lines, covers and curves. Polish the base carefully therefore and spray an intermediate gloss coat. Divide the colored bands on the tail surfaces into shorter sections where you can, as a large decal is hard to work over a curve. Use the softener gradually, in two or three light coats rather than one heavy one — too aggressive an application can tear the thin film. Once dry, varnish over the decals and only then spray the final matte or semi-gloss coat. Bring out the panel lines right at the very end, so that the excess solution can be wiped off without the risk of damaging the edges of the decals.
The package holds only the decals. The model, paints and glue are not part of it.
