A masking set in 1:48 scale for spraying the American insignia of the summer of 1943.
Responsibility details are not available.
During the Second World War American aircraft carried a star in a circular field, to which white rectangles at the sides were added in 1943. From the end of June to the middle of August 1943 there was a short period when the insignia had a red surround; after that the surround turned blue and stayed that way until the end of the war. The insignia of the summer of 1943 is therefore a rewarding one for modelers: on its own it says when the machine was flying.
These are masking templates for spraying the insignia in 1:48 scale, that is a substitute for decals. A sprayed insignia is part of the finish, has no film thickness and no silvery veil forms under it, so it looks more faithful than a decal. How many insignia and in what sizes the set holds is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
The templates go on a dry coat of paint before spraying, not after it. Press the edges down carefully with a blunt tool, so that no paint runs under them. Spray in thin coats and at right angles to the surface, not at an angle under the edge of the mask. The insignia is made up of several shades, so the coats are sprayed in turn and the mask is moved between them; the order of the shades and the masks is given in the manufacturer's instructions. Lift the mask off as soon as the paint is touch-dry, as a fully cured finish tears at the edge.
What is supplied is a set of masks. The model, paints and varnish are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
