A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a model of the British Supermarine Walrus Mk.I amphibian in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is not a model or decals but an aid that turns masking into a matter of a few minutes instead of a whole evening. The single-sided version means that the masks cover the outer side of the clear parts. The Walrus has a glazed pilots cockpit and windows in the hull, and its framing is very small and rectangular, so trimming tape by hand tends to be particularly tedious on this type. The masks are cut to the outline of a particular kit and will not fit a kit from another manufacturer.
The Supermarine Walrus was a British single-engine amphibious biplane with a boat-shaped hull and a Bristol Pegasus engine mounted in a nacelle between the wings in pusher configuration. It was created to a design by Reginald Joseph Mitchell and served from the 1930s. The machines were launched by catapult from the decks of cruisers and battleships, where they carried out reconnaissance and gunfire spotting. Later the type became known above all in the air-sea rescue role, because it could land at sea and take the crew of a downed aircraft aboard. The Mk.I version had a metal hull, while the later Mk.II was built with a wooden one.
Degrease the glazing first and let it dry. Lift the individual parts off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel, set them onto the glass from one edge and push the air out. Seat the small rectangular hull windows calmly and check them against the light to see whether a mask overhangs onto the frame. Press the edges down with a toothpick. Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat of paint builds a step at the edge. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling back at an acute angle over themselves, and wipe adhesive residue away with lukewarm water.
It is a supplementary set of masks, not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.
