A water container with a volume of twenty liters is one of those objects that are everywhere and surprise nobody, and precisely for that reason give a scene credibility. This accessory is not a model of machinery but a stand-alone object of a diorama. In 1:48 scale it is a very small part whose purpose is to fill an empty spot and to give a composition a legible sense of scale beside a figure or a vehicle.
The barrel suits yards, workshops, sheds, field support areas and garden scenes, where it serves as a container for rainwater under a downpipe. Placing it under a downpipe is the classic arrangement and adds logic to a scene. It is also effective to stand the barrel slightly tilted or with spilled water around it suggested with a gloss varnish. Several such small things placed about a scene will do more for the overall impression than one more large element.
After washing and drying, clean up the parting marks with a fine sanding sponge and lay down a thin coat of base color. Choose the base shade according to whether the barrel is to be plastic or metal, because each ages differently: plastic fades and gets dirty, metal rusts from the edges and from the bottom. A dark wash will draw into the recesses and the rim, and a dry brush will bring out the bands. Water in an open barrel is done with a drop of gloss resin or a heavy coat of varnish; the important thing is to let it cure completely. Dust the lower part of the piece with a pigment and cover the transition to the base with a little grass or mud, so that the barrel does not look as if it had merely been set down.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base for the diorama are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
