A garden and building wheelbarrow is one of the most versatile props in a diorama. This accessory is a separate object of a scene, not a kit of an aircraft or a vehicle: it is added to a finished model, to a building or to figures and completes the setting. In 1:48 scale it matches an ordinary hand barrow in size, so it can be stood beside a figure, propped against a wall or laid on the ground upside down.
The wheelbarrow comes into its own in civilian and military scenes alike: in the yard of a country house, by a field workshop, in a hangar, on a building site or among the rubble of a building. It is exactly such small things that give a diorama its scale and its story: the viewer knows at once how big the main model is and the scene stops looking empty. Because it is not tied to a particular kit, it can be combined with any model in 1:48 scale.
Once it is cut off the sprue gate, sand the spot and degrease the surface before painting. Apply a thin primer, then a metal or faded color shade on the tray and wood on the handles. A wheelbarrow is a rewarding object for a patina: rust patches on the sheet metal, chipping on the edges with a dry brush, dried mud or pigment on the tire and the underside of the tray. A dark wash picks out the rivets and the edges. Small parts are most reliably joined with super glue (cyanoacrylate); plastic will also take a thin plastic cement. Work with tweezers and in a well-ventilated room.
