A 1:48 scale sheet of markings for the Japanese Aichi D3A1 Val carrier bomber, the second in the series. Three Model 11 aircraft, two of which took off for the Hawaii operation and one of which served on trials over China.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 1:48 size makes it possible to show the detail of the cockpit and the landing gear struts, and yet the finished model fits into an ordinary display case. With the Aichi D3A1 that goes double: its long glazed cabin for two men and the large wheel fairings are exactly the elements that disappear at smaller sizes. The decals therefore have to be precisely printed to stand up to a close look.
The second part of the collection contains three color schemes. Two belong to Model 11 machines used over Hawaii in December 1941, and for one of them the name of the gunner and radio operator is given as well. The third aircraft falls into an entirely different chapter: it is an example from the first production batch, flown on trials in China at the beginning of 1940.
The Aichi designers took their inspiration from German designs of the late 1930s, and from there come the elliptical wing and the fixed landing gear with aerodynamic fairings. Under the fuselage hung the main bomb crutch with a swinging fork, which threw the bomb clear of the propeller arc. The machine was agile enough to defend itself even against fighters once it had dropped its load, and its crews were at first among the best trained in the Pacific.
The markings are transferred after soaking and can still be shifted on the model for a while. It is a good idea to blot the excess water away with a paper tissue from the middle out to the edge so that no bubble is left under the film.
The plastic kit is not part of the delivery.
